- Police have arrested three people outside the Shangri-La
Hotel in the Rocks where it is believed visiting US Vice-Presidnet Dick
Cheney is staying. This takes the arrest tally to 11, following a much
larger protest last night outside the Sydney Town Hall where protesters
and police clashed after the NSW Police Force's decision to declare the
protest illegal.
-
- At this stage it is unknown whether charges will be laid
against the three, but a police spokeswoman said the arrests were made
at 9.20 this morning.
-
- Of the eight arrested last night, six men, one youth
and one woman, were taken from George Street, Sydney to Surry Hills police
station, where six of the men and the woman were charged with a range
of offences including assault police, obstruct traffic, malicious damage,
inciting crowd violence, resist arrest, along with offensive conduct and
language.
-
- Of the seven, six will appear at Downing Centre Local
Court on March 15. The 16-year-old male was issued a caution to be dealt
with under the Young Offenders Act.
-
- The eighth person, a 34-year-old man, was released without
charge following arrest for breach of the peace. Three police officers
suffered minor injuries during the Operation.
- The protest, which attracted about 300 people, had minimal
impact on traffic and public transport, as police managed to contain the
crowd.
