- On April 12, 2007 the Senate version of the federal hate
crimes bill was introduced by Sen. Kennedy and Smith into the U.S. Senate
Committee on the Judiciary: the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention
Act, S. 1105.

- Time is of the essence. A year and a half ago the House
passed the federal hate bill in 45 minutes. Senate Majority Leader Reid
could fast-track S. 1105 to a vote with astonishing speed.

- The House, in fact, could also vote on its version of
the hate bill, H.R. 1592, at any time. The recent massacre of students
in Virginia only strengthens the case of hate bill supporters that hate
and hate crimes are rampant in America, necessitating a vastly greater
presence of the federal government in local law enforcement.

- For the moment, however, our attention should be directed
primarily to the Senate and Senate Committee on the Judiciary. If you can
do nothing else, call your member of the Senate. Unlike the House bill,
H.R. 1592, introduced almost secretly by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee on January
5, Kennedy and Smith are boldly publicizing S. 1105. Rather than trying
to sneak S. 1105 through the Senate, they are rallying support behind their
bill and the sentiment associated with the grisly murder of Matthew Shepard.

- Actually, this could be a blessing in disguise -- a splendid
time to flood Senators and their legislative aides with the truth about
how hate laws have taken away free speech in much of the world. Our object
is to not only kill these bills in Congress now but to destroy their prospects
of ever being reintroduced. Act now!
