33 Million Pounds Of E. Coli
Beef Recalled In 2007

From Patricia Doyle, PhD
2-21-8

Hello Jeff - Let us not forget the E. Coli infected beef recalls for 2007. That total was 33.3 Million pounds of beef. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that beef was returned.  Why?  Because the beef has been mostly eaten by the time the recall occurs.  And, we assume, the manufacturers didn't have to absorb the losses of the consumed flesh.

The current debate is focused on whether or not mad cow infected meat entered the food chain as a result of the latest atrocity of the use of downer cows.  Of course, if couldd...and probably did.

That's why as much as a BILLION pounds of (mostly already eaten) beef is being recalled.

And let us not forget sick cows also could be carrying E. Coli which has also sickened and killed people who eat such infected beef. Last year was a banner year for "recalled" E. Coli beef.
There is also a fear of Bovine T.B. infected meat. Minnesota has just recently identified Bovine T. B. cases in Beef. Mad Cow is just one of a myriad of illnesses that afflict downer cows.

Here is a list of diseases that could be residing that 'tasty' fast food double cheese burger...

2007 E. coli Recall Totals More Than 33.3 Million Pounds
By Bill Marler

The year 2007 is going to be remembered for the big beef recalls due to E. coli returning with a vengeance. All totaled meat producers were forced to recall over 33.3 million pounds of beef products.

Topping the list was the 21.7 million pound recall due to E. coli that sent the New Jersey-based Topps Foods into bankruptcy. When United Food Group in June was forced to recall 5.7 million pounds of E. coli-laced ground beef, no one would have guessed it was going to lead to a second half of 2007 that found E. coli in beef just like the bad old days.

E. coli forced the recall of 3.3 million pounds of Totino's and Jeno's frozen meat pizzas. In two separate recalls, Cargill had to recall over 1.9 million pounds of beef they had contaminated with the deadly E. coli pathogen.

Most of the big recalls of 2007 remain on the active case list of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The percentage of recalled products actually returned to manufacturers is often pretty low.
