Rabies In Dog Flown
Out Of Iraq To US
From Patricia Doyle, PhD
7-2-8

Hello Jeff - Please can someone tell me what DVM moron OK'd the health of some 26 dogs and cats to leave Iraq and rejoin their solder owners in the US and elsewhere? Are these Iraqi animals

who became casualties of the war and were adopted by soldiers?

I certainly understand the attachment some soldiers may have for them and it is great they chose to have them rejoin them at home. HOWEVER, according to my understanding, these animals had other health conditions and we now know one had rabies.

They would not be allowed to come to the US without a veterinary OK. So, what idiot checked

these animals and gave them a clean bill of health?

One of the 26 dogs and cats flown out of Iraq to rejoin soldiers in the USA has tested positive for rabies. SPCA International [Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals] says the rabies was discovered this week [23-26 Jun 2008] after Crusader, a 55-pound black Labrador mix, was euthanized for other health reasons.

The animals arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport 3 weeks ago. SPCA officials say the organization complied with all customs and health regulations, and that all 26 animals were cleared to enter the USA.

Health officials are recommending revaccination of the remaining dogs and cats. In addition, people who may have had close contact with Crusader should talk with their doctor about whether they need treatment. The (New Jersey) state Health Department is monitoring the situation.

Animals from this shipment were distributed to 16 states. For health
reasons other than rabies, a number of animals from this shipment
were euthanized.
This is the 3rd such situation that has occurred in an approximately
2 month period. For more in-depth comment, readers are referred to
