Compromise At The Core
Jim Kirwan
8-23-10

This game that we've been playing with ourselves has been run, it's over and we lost, whether we admit it or not. The core set of values that we once held or at least attempted to hold, has, in too many cases been compromised to the point where nothing is real anymore-because the con that we've been feeding ourselves was all a lie.

As with anything else that counts in the longer view, this began with us as individuals and it will end with each one of us as we decide what to do with the wreckage that we've made from the gift of life that we each arrived with.

Many who believed that they were fighting-the good-fight; upon a closer examination will discover that much of what they thought they were doing turns out to have been something else entirely. It's true, because of the complexity of the times we live in and the things we chose to categorize because of time and circumstance, but also because of overlapping priorities that do not allow for neat or simple answers to those complex questions we have too often refused to ask ourselves.

A partial answer can sometimes be found in what happens inside these often unseen addictions. But addictions are not the exclusive property of drugs, or alcohol or cigarettes. Some degree of 'addiction' is present in most of the things that each of us do everyday. Self-deception takes many forms and we have become very skilled at disguising these self-deceptions now for many decades.

The difference between being 'an addict' and having just a heightened concentration of interest, can be as fine as the micro-fine-line that exists between love and hate. Our owners know this 'all too well.' They've been playing us for suckers since long before they commissioned Edward Bernays to create the myth on which his "Century of the Self" was created.

"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.

We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized." - Edward Bernays (1)

His work formed the basis for mass-corruption of the public-imagination, but that was only the beginning. The part that individuals have played takes millions of different forms, each with its own set of particular delusions.

Leonard Cohen summarizes one of the more personal defeats which have become part of a vast but still unrecognized plague that has spread across all boundaries in this society. He eloquently describes some of what happens to millions, if not billions of us, the world over-as people seek a "high" that is impossible to reach without the drugs and the personal deceptions which are followed by the horrible death that follows very quickly once the addiction to the drugs becomes set. "The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat.
You win awhile and then it's done,
Your little winning streak.

And summon now, it's time to deal,
With your invincible defeat
You live your life as if it's real,
A thousand kisses deep.

I'm turn'n tricks, I'm gett'n fixed,
I'm back on Boggey Street.

You lose your grip, and then you slip
Into the masterpiece.
And maybe I, had miles to drive,
And promises to keep.

You ditch it all to stay alive,
A thousand kisses deep

And sometimes when the night is slow,
The wretched and the meek;
We gather up, our hearts and go,
A thousand kisses deep.

Confined to sex, we pressed against
The limits of the sea.
I saw there were, no oceans left,
For scavengers like me.

I made it to a forward deck,
Our blessed our ramm'n fleet
And then consent,
To be wrecked,
A thousand kisses deep.

I'm turn'n tricks, I'm gett'n fixed,
I'm back on Boggey Street.
I guess they won't exchange the gifts,
That you were meant to keep.

And quiet is, the part of you,
The file on you complete;
Except what we, forgot to do,
A thousand kisses deep.

And sometimes when,
The night is slow, the wretched and the meek,
We gather up our hearts and go,
A thousand kisses deep.

The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat,
You win awhile, and then it's done,
You're little winning streak.
And summon now to deal,
With you're invincible defeat.

You live your life as if it's real,
A thousand kisses deep."

The planet will survive, but we as members of the global society must decide very soon which side of the current equation we shall choose to become part of as this Compromise at the Core of ourselves leaves very little room for any more mistakes. The Corporations now own this place and almost everything that's in it. The remaining question seems to be: Who or what owns you?
