80 Bats Shot With BB Gun Under AZ Bridge
From Patricia Doyle, PhD
1-9-11

Hello Jeff - IF the bats were indeed shot, this is an extremely cruel deed. Bats are fighting for their survival. What puzzles me, however, is why the bats were still under the bridge and had not migrated to Mexico as they normally do each year.

It is a relief the know that White Nose Syndrome has been ruled out as cause of death, but I would like to find out why this group of bats had not migrated.

80 Dead Bats Killed By BB Gun
Criminal Investigation Underway

TUCSON -- About 80 bats were found dead or dying last week underneath a Tucson bridge, and scientists have determined the reason for their mysterious death.

The bats were shot by a BB gun, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Rabies was the first cause of death ruled out.

Scientists examined 11 bats at a lab in Phoenix and found they suffered physical trauma consistent with being shot with a 4 mm BB gun. Three BB pellets were recovered from their bodies.

At a lab in Madison, a fourth BB and similar signs of trauma were found. They ruled out White Nose Syndrome as the cause of death.

Magnesium chloride poisoning was also ruled out -- magnesium chloride was used by the City of Tucson to de-ice the bridge.

The remaining bats removed from the scene were examined at the Pima Animal Care Center. They also exhibited consistent trauma.

"This is an especially cruel case, given the number of animals killed outright or apparently mortally wounded by BBs ricocheting around beneath the bridge," said Regional Supervisor Raul Vega of Arizona Game and Fish.

A criminal investigation is underway. Game and Fish is offering a $750 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. The perpetrator is facing a maximum of four months in jail and a $750 fine.
