From A Reader
The autonomous atmospheric flash before the explosion is a localized phenomenon created by atmospheric temperature inversion created by temperature stratification creating an "air dam" above the plant. As this phenomenon developed at the explosion site, it trap explosive gases in the atmosphere with those gases being emitted from the fire itself by incomplete burnoff.
When the level of explosive gases reached a certain level it created an air burst explosion above the plant in Texas, doubling or even tripling the effects of the explosion.
