Navi Pillay Targets Syria

By Stephen Lendman
1-20-12

She's UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her job involves spurning them. She's a reliable imperial tool. She's up to her old tricks.

On January 18, she addressed the Security Council in closed session. More on that below.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) lists her credentials. Post-apartheid in 1995, she was appointed a South African High Court judge.

The same year, she was chosen to serve on the International Tribunal for Rwanda (ICRT). From 1999 - 2003, she served as president.

ICRT lacked credibility. It served imperial interests. It pointed fingers the wrong way. Guilty parties were absolved. Victims were prosecuted. While president, Pillay bore full responsibility.

OHCHR claimed otherwise. It lied. It turned truth on its head. It said Pillay "played a critical role in the ICTR's groundbreaking jurisprudence on rape as genocide, as well as on issues of freedom of speech and hate propaganda."

Michel Chossudovsky explained Washington's hidden Rwanda agenda. It prioritized "establishing an American sphere of influence in a region historically dominated by France and Belgium."

Rwanda's civil war and "ethnic massacres were an integral part of US foreign policy, carefully staged in accordance with precise strategic and economic objective."

Pillay's ICTR mandate was suppressing truth.

In 2003, she was appointed an International Criminal Court (ICC) judge. She served until August 2008.

ICC functions solely as an imperial tool. It targets victims Washington and other Western powers want charged with crimes of war, against humanity and genocide. Crimes of aggression will be included later.

Responsible major powers are absolved. Victims have no chance. Guilt by accusation is policy. Pillay advanced her career by going along. She sold her soul in the process. She did it before. She's doing it now. It's getting to be a habit.

Al Jazeera's credibility is sorely lacking. It's a Qatar monarchy propaganda vehicle. It's no different from BBC and other scoundrel media sources.

On January 19, it headlined "UN rights chief urges Syria war crimes probe."

Since conflict erupted in 2011, Pillay waged war on Syria. She targets victims. Perpetrators are absolved.

On January 18, she addressed a closed Security Council session. She urged Member States to act. No one knows the true casualty count.

She claims 60,000 is "a conservative figure." Numbers "speak for themselves," she added. She stopped short of pointing fingers the right way.

"I have urged the Security Council to refer the situation to the International Criminal Court for investigation of war crimes and crimes against humanity on the part of all parties engaged in the conflict," she said.

It's clear which ones she means. Syrians "see the situation as the United Nations not carrying out its responsibility to protect victims," she added.

She blames Assad for "massive scale" killing. She suppresses truth. In early January, she urged Western intervention.

"Where is the international community," she asked? "Why aren't (world leaders) acting to stop this slaughter?" She blames Assad for slaughtering his own people. Doing so turns truth on its head.

Earlier in January, Washington pressured dozens of countries to petition the Security Council for action. It wants Assad held responsible for Western-generated crimes.

Russia and China oppose imperial intentions. They vetoed three one-sided Security Council Resolutions. They oppose lawless Western intervention. They support Syrian sovereignty. They want Syrians alone to decide who'll govern.

Britain's UN ambassador, Lyall Grant, spoke on behalf of other nations urging Security Council action, saying:

"In the face of such a dramatic death toll and the silence of the Security Council, we felt that we must speak out on the absolute need for accountability and to send a clear message that the international community is not turning a blind eye to the atrocities being committed in Syria."

"Without accountability, there will be no sustainable peace." Achieving it's as simple as Washington calling off its dogs. Longstanding plans call for regime change. Replacing Assad with subservient pro-Western leadership is planned.

America spurns peace and stability. Conflicts are prioritized. Obama's waging multiple direct and proxy wars. Others are planned.

Valerie Amos serves Western interests. She's Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

She's also Britain's former High Commissioner to Australia. She also was House of Lords leader and Lord President of the Council. In 2003, she served in Tony Blair's cabinet. She represents imperial interests, not Syrians.

She also briefed SC members. Afterwards she addressed reporters. She said sexual violence against Syrian women is rising. She spoke to women refugees, she claimed.

They raised the issue. Amos stopped short of pointing fingers the right way. Western-sponsored death squads committed gruesome atrocities. They continue.

Assad is wrongfully blamed. Amos didn't explain. Nor did Pillay. They represent imperial interests. They're paid to lie.

Syria responded. On January 18, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) headlined "Foreign Ministry: Some Countries' Insistence on Referring Situation in Syria to ICC is Wrong Approach."

A letter to Security Council president Masood Khan (Pakistan) called doing so the "wrong approach."

Syria shares other nations' concerns about human rights violations. Armed terrorists are responsible, it said.

What's ongoing "constitute(s) a large departure from the state of stability, security and freedom of religion and belief which Syria and the Syrians used to enjoy before the crisis."

"The Syrian government voices regret over those countries' insistence on adopting a wrong approach that rejects to acknowledge the Syrian state's duty in protecting its people from the terrorism imposed on it from the outside."

Western countries and regional allies bear full responsibility, it stressed. Washington and others "practice hypocrisy and double standards regarding the crisis in Syria and the international human rights laws in general."

"While they voice their concern for the Syrian people and about the international humanitarian law and the international human rights law, they ignore the political, media, logistic and military support provided to the armed groups."

They "also hinder the Syrian national dialogue and the efforts seeking a peaceful solution to the crisis based on the political program proposed by President Bashar al-Assad on January 6th, which we handed you a copy of few days after its announcement."

If they "really" want months of conflict and humanitarian suffering ended, "then the right way to do this doesn't pass through escalatory and investigative moves that pour oil on the fire."

 "The right way:"

 (1) pressures countries "funding, sheltering, training, and sending terrorists to Syria…."

 (2) pressuring "issuers of 'fatwas' who provide the excuses for killing, abducting and torturing Syrians and destroying and looting their properties…."

 (3) "Lifting the illegal and immoral unilateral sanctions."

 (4) Halting weapons sent to "armed terrorist groups."

Conflict resolution depends on doing the right thing. Observing rule of law principles is fundamental. So is respecting Syrian sovereignty.

Foreign interference is lawless. Syrians have sole right to decide who'll govern. Ending conflict requires truth and full disclosure. Washington remains the greatest obstacle to peace.
