Is US Planning Another Coup Attempt in Venezuela?

Earlier US attempts to replace Venezuela’s democratically elected Bolivarian government with puppet rule beholden to Washington failed.

According to United Socialist Party (PSUV) parliamentary vice president Diosdado Cabello, US-supported fascist opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) leaders intend initiating a regime change plot.

Dubbed “Plan Rock n’ Roll,” it follows Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) suspending their recall referendum because of significant irregularities in collecting the required percentage of authorizing signatures.

Last week, opposition official Jose Vincente Garcia had hand grenades and bullet-proof vests in his possession when arrested, authorities tipped off about his involvement in a coup plot.

It involves marches, violent street protests, strike actions, and a dubious anti-government “people’s petition.”

Venezuelan Solidarity Campaign secretary Francisco Dominguez said “Mud’s most extreme currents, unsurprisingly, have announced they will be resorting to unconstitutional, illegal and violent means to oust the legitimate, constitutional and democratically elected government of President Nicolas Maduro.”

“This has been the declared aim since Mud won the elections to the National Assembly in December 2015.”

“Violence is the path they have chosen - such as the April 2002 coup d’etat. Every time they fail in their undemocratic aims.”

According to Venezuela Analysis, Russian and Venezuelan “military high command(s) issued statements Tuesday opposing foreign intervention” - after coup plotters “beg(an) the process of determining the constitutional situation of the Presidency of the Republic.”

The nation’s Supreme Court ruled all National Assembly actions null and void until three lawmakers linked to vote-buying claims are removed.

Venezuelan Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino Lopez said parliamentary action was initiated to “gravely harm the country’s institutions by way of anarchy and chaos in order to ultimately overthrow a legitimately established government.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned against foreign interference, saying “(w)e believe that this is the path that one needs to take, in compliance with the constitutional framework, without destructive interference from the outside, which is absolutely unacceptable, without trying to impose one or another model, which are splitting the society.”

Russia supports Venezuela’s sovereign independence. Both countries maintain strong ties.

On Wednesday, thousands of supportive and opposition Venezuelans demonstrated in Caracas and other major cities.

According to Telesur, “(p)ro-government demonstrators assembled at the Miraflores presidential palace while clusters of opposition supporters gathered at various points across the Venezuelan capital.”

“Government supporters said they will protect the constitution of Venezuela against any unlawful threat and will reject any attempt to destabilize the country and promote violence.”

Ahead of a Defense Council meeting, Maduro said “(t)he people…support the revolution. The right wing is desperate. They have received orders from the north to end” it.

“The National Assembly has unfortunately taken the road of contempt. They (don’t) want…dialogue.”

Defense Minister Lopez stressed Venezuela’s military commitment to protect constitutional order against unlawful destabilization threats - expressing support for Maduro’s legitimacy, stressing:

“We reject the incitements to violence by some opposition sectors who had even called for an international intervention in Venezuela, ignoring the despicable consequences that such things would bring - (including) chaos and anarchy.”
