Aspartame - Predisposition To Obesity & Diabetes
  Harvard Medical School
Plus Commentary On FDA's Alzheimer Affliction

By Dr. Betty Martini, D.Hum
3-13-17

Martini:  I've been saying this about aspartame triggering obesity and diabetes  for 27 years since I've been warning on aspartame.  Obesity and Diabetes are completely discussed in the 1000 page medical text, "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic" by the late diabetic specialist and world expert on aspartame, H. J. Roberts, M.D., www.amazon.com Independent Scientific peer reviewed research for years has connected aspartame with obesity and diabetes,  and metabolic syndrome.

Recently, a new book by Linda and Bill Bonvie  (2017) called  "BADDITIVES!" was published.  It even has a forward by Attorney James Turner who with Dr. John Olney tried to prevent the approval of aspartame.   On page 31 and 32 the petitions for ban of aspartame by Dr. Ken Stoller and myself are discussed.  Steven Musser, Deputy Director for Scientific Operations of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition said the FDA continues "to monitor the scientific literature for information that might indicate potential public health concerns" about aspartame, and would take "appropriate action" if it finds the sweetener's uses "do not meet the safety standards for food additives."  FDA has been saying that for 3 decades!

Bonvie says "That monitoring effort, however, appears to have missed an awful lot of scientific literature that not only already exists, but has been right before its eyes,"   Here is just a few things the FDA has forgotten:

1.  Almost 100% of independent scientific peer reviewed studies show the problems triggered or precipitated by aspartame.  Oops, FDA seems to have missed 900 studies that we know of, and the studies continue constantly. Some very damning studies are done out of the country and never published according to translators and researchers.     Even in the 1990's when 60 Minutes did an expose of  aspartame Dr. Ralph Walton did research on the issue showing 92% of independent peer reviewed research showed the problems but if you eliminate one pro-industry summary and 6 studies the FDA had something to do with, it would be 100 per cent. Since that time independent studies have shown everything from myocardial infarctions and strokes to all types of cancers,  The "old FDA" originally condemned aspartame, but today some of their scientists have admitted they are broken.  FDA receives over half its funding from Big Pharma.   Guess who runs the Fatal Drugs Allowed folks?

2.  The FDA seems to be suffering from memory loss that the task force they set up headed by Dr. Adrian Gross,  their lead scientist revealed lies and deceit such as:

"Excising masses (removing tumors) from live animals in some cases without histologic examination of the masses, in others without reporting them to the FDA." (Schmidt 1976c, page 4 of US Senate l976b). Searle's representatives, when caught and questioned about these actions, stated that "these masses were in the head and neck areas and prevented the animals from feeding." (Buzzard l976a) [In other words, the cancers were so big they choked the animals.]

G. D. Searle told the FDA 12 lots of DKP were manufactured and tested in one study, yet only seven batches were actually made. (Gross l985, page S10835) Diketopiperazine is a brain tumor agent which breaks down from the aspartame molecule.

In the aspartame (DKP) 115 week rat study the written observations of the pathology report was changed by the supervising pathologist, Dr. Rudolph Stejskal even though he was not physically present during the autopsies and could not have verified the observations of the pathologist who did perform the autopsies. The pathologist who did perform some of the autopsies had no formal training for such procedures. (Gross l985, page S10837 of Congressional Record 1985b)

"Contrary to protocol, slides were not prepared of the (unusual lesions from the aspartame (DKP) study tissue for microscopic examination..." (Gross l985, page S10837 of Congressional Record l985b)

FDA Toxicologist and Task Force member, Dr Adrian Gross stated (Wilson l985): "They (G.D. Searle) lied and they didn't submit the real nature of their observations because had they done that it is more likely that a great number of these studies would have been rejected simply for adequacy. What Searle did, they took great pains to camouflage these shortcomings of the study. As I say filter and just present to the FDA what they wished the FDA to know and they did other terrible things for instance animals would develop tumors while they were under study. Well they would remove these tumors from the animals."

An FDA Toxicologist explained why their experiments were invalidated: "It is highly unlikely the FDA Investigative teams found all of the problems with G. D. Searle's studies. G. D. Searle seemed so intent on covering up their misconduct, that it is quite likely that they were able to hide many of the problems from the FDA.

The task force report is very extensive on the deceits so G. D. Searle filed to have it taken off the record, but we have it.

3.  On Jan 10, l977 in a 33 page letter, FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill recommended to U.S. Attorney Sam Skinner that a grand jury investigate Searle for "apparent violations of the Federal, Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, 21 U.S.C. 331 (e), and the False Reports to the Government Act, 18 U.S.C. 1001, for 'their willful and knowing failure to make reports to the Food and Drug Administration required by the Act, 21 U.S.C. 355 (i), and for concealing material facts and making false statements in reports of animal studies conducted to establish the safety of aspartame.'" The FDA called special attention to studies investigating the effect of NutraSweet on monkeys and hamsters.

Since everything was all a matter of public record the manufacturer was in deep, er, difficulty, and had to creatively avoid an indictment. Both U.S. Prosecutors, Sam Skinner and William Conlon were hired by the defense lawyers, Sidley and Austin, and the statute of limitations expired. When the district attorney gets a job with the godfather, expect acquittal.  Now how could the FDA forget aspartame was never proven safe in the first place,

4.  FDA didn't give up back then.  The FDA Board of Inquiry voted to revoke the petition for approval and in their report said it was because aspartame could not be proven safe and caused brain tumors. Read it on my web site, www.mpwhi.com

5.  Surely the FDA hasn't forgotten that aspartame was approved through the political chicanery of Don Rumsfeld hired  by G. D. Searle to get it on the market.,  FDA Commissioner Jeri Goyan would have signed the revoked petition into law but his wife told me someone from President Reagan's transition team called and fired him at 3:00 AM the day after he took office.  G. D. Searle had filed suit and Rumsfeld being on the transition team said he would call in his markers and get it approved.    President Reagan by executive order prevented Goyan from signing the revoked petition.   One of Rumsfeld's buddies from the Defense Department was appointed FDA Commissioner, Arthur Hull Hayes and over-ruled the Board of Inquiry allowing this deadly chemical poison to be marketed for human consumption. Then he went to work for the PR Agency of the manufacturer for $1000.00 a day on a ten year contract,  Rumsfeld got twelve million when it was sold to Monsanto in 1985.

6.  Has the FDA forgotten the 33 page protest of the National Soft Drink Association, now American Beverage, even quoting the adulteration law,  http://www.rense.com/general96/pepsi.htm Why then did they lobby for NutraSweet?  More on aspartame and adulteration,  http://www.rense.com/general67/aspar.htm About Ed  Johnson's comments here, he was a US Prosecutor until he  started using aspartame and got an aspartame brain tumor which he discusses in the documentary, "Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World".  Do get you a copy of this movie from www.sweetremedyradio. com  The FDA has serious memory problems.  It seems they have forgotten that it is illegal to ship an adulterated product for sale under Interstate Commerce law,

7.  It seems the FDA has also forgotten their deal with G. D. Searle to seal the  teratology studies from the public that showed such things as neural tube defects, spina bifida and cleft palate.  They also left off the pregnancy warning allowing autism and other horrible birth defects to spread throughout the world.  In August 1977 the FDA audit, headed by Jerome Bressler was released. Records for approximately 30 animals showed substantial differences between original observations on pathology sheets submitted to FDA. There were numerous inconsistencies and errors noted. For example, a rat was reported alive, then dead, then alive, then dead again; a mass, a uterine polyp and ovarian neoplasms were found in animals but not reported or diagnosed in Searle's reports. The FDA investigators found dose-related uterine polyps in 15% of 34 animals. Read the entire report at
www.mpwhi.com

As damning as the report is, when I spoke with Jerome Bressler he admitted the worst 20% of his report was removed in retyping by FDA and asked me to try to get two mice studies and his cover letter. Doctors H. J. Roberts and Russell Blaylock both spoke with Jerome Bressler as well after which Dr. Roberts asked his congressman to retrieve the missing condemnatory data that the public has a right to know. The FDA refused. Said it was confidential.    Took me 8 years to find these studies with the FDA admitting aspartame caused birth defects.  Dr. Woodrow Monte wrote:  "While Science Sleeps: A Sweetener Kills":  www.whilesciencesleeps.com Read the last chapter on aspartame and autism free.  He exposed aspartame to such an extent his house was blown up with him in it.

8. Wouldn't you know it, the FDA completely has  forgotten  their  own report of 92 symptoms  from 4 types of seizures to coma and death:  http://www.mpwhi.com/92_aspartame_symptoms.pdf

9.  FDA  memory lapse again.  Why have they conveniently   forgotten there is no safe dose on aspartame as their lead scientist, Dr. Adrian Gross told the Senate on 8/1/85?  Gross testified because aspartame produced brain tumors and brain cancer, FDA should not  have been able to set an allowable daily intake of the substance at any level: "In view of these indications that the cancer causing potential of aspartame is a matter that has been established way beyond any reasonable doubt, one can ask: What is the reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this food additive the so-called Delaney Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act?

10: Can you even imagine  the FDA has completely neglected to remember  the Delaney Amendment?  The Delaney Amendment makes it illegal to allow any residues of cancer causing chemicals in foods. In his concluding testimony  to the Senate Gross asked, "Given the (cancer causing potential of aspartame) how would the FDA justify its position that it views a certain amount of aspartame as constituting an allowable daily intake or 'safe' level of it? Is that position in effect not equivalent to setting a 'tolerance' for this food additive and thus a violation of that law? And if the FDA itself elects to violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public?"

11: The FDA has put right out of their mind  the testimony to the Senate by Dr. Jacqueline Verrett in 1987:  Dr. Jacqueline Verrett, a former FDA toxicologist and member of the FDA task force told Congress the original studies were "built on a foundation of sand." In a 1987 Senate hearing she testified that flawed tests conducted by Searle - used as the basis of FDA approval - were a "disaster" and should have been "thrown out." She said that even then, years after approval, the safety of aspartame and its breakdown products had not been determined. She emphasized aspartame is in the marketplace without basic toxicity information. Also that there are no data to assess the interactions with DKP, excess phenylalanine, other aspartame metabolites, additives, drugs or other chemicals. Today we know aspartame interacts with  drugs and vaccines and is a chemical hypersensitization agent.  Dr. Verrett was the toxicologist who was at the FDA when all the skullduggery was going on.  Note  aspartame was approved in 1981 and she is testifying in 1987 that its on the market  even then without basic toxicity information.  In other words aspartame was still not proven safe.  Nor can it ever be proven safe.

12.  The FDA has even forgotten the damning Trocho Study  by Dr. M. Alemany which showed the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol embalms living tissue and  damages DNA,  I guess they also forgot when you damage DNA you can destroy humanity,  http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_and_preembalming.htm I wish they had remembered you're suppose to embalm after death, not before death.  I visited Dr. Alemany in Barcelona and the first thing he said to me was "Betty, aspartame will kill 200 million people!"  I replied, "I believe it already has."  In the Ramazzini study proving aspartame is a multipotential carcinogen  the rats turned yellow from the formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a Class A carcinogen.

13.  The FDA is oblivious  that aspartame was proven to trigger seizures even by G. D. Searle's own study.  A 52 week oral toxicity study on 7 infant monkeys showed 5 had grand mal seizures and one died.  This study was pivotal in the approval of aspartame,  Obviously the FDA had even forgotten what a pivotal study means. It is usually data  the FDA uses to decide whether or not to approve a drug. A pivotal study  will be the best to show safety.  Then FDA tells the public aspartame doesn't trigger seizures, even with four types on their own report.  It also interacts with all anti-seizure medication.  The interaction of aspartame with drugs is in Dr. H. J. Roberts medical text mentioned above.

14.  Aspartame was first approved for only dry products because FDA admitted  it breaks down and the protest of the National Soft Drink Assn said at moderate temperature or 86 degrees. You can read their entire protest above.  So when they approved Equal they just  failed to remember when you put Equal in hot coffee or tea you heat it.  A child knows that.  So with FDA we have an agency with Alzheimers which aspartame itself precipitates, By 1993 the FDA's Alzheimers had advanced to such a degree they  approved it for baking! By 1996  they approved it for everything even though the manufacturer admitted themselves that was not the case.    Secret Trade Info, part of the congressional record:  http://www.mpwhi.com/trad_secret_information_on_aspartame.htm

15.  The FDA forgot they were there to protect the public not industry.  A famous quote by former FDA  Commissioner Herbert  Ley:  "The thing that bugs me the most is that people think the FDA is protecting them - it isn't.  What the FDA is doing and what the public thinks it is doing are as different as day and night."  As Dr. Gross told Congress if they  violate the law  who is left to protect the public?  Jerome Bressler  told me the same thing.

I could easily add 50 more acts of FDA "forgetfulness" but the subject is so humongous it needs to be a book rather than a short commentary on the subject.    Since  Mission Possible World Health Intl exists only to protect the public by educating them about the chemical poison aspartame and get it off the market, I think the aspartame experts should diagnose FDA's memory loss, and the sentence for their crimes should be termination.  They should be prosecuted under Title 18 of the domestic genocide law.  Here is the evidence:
http://www.rense.com/general/asp.htm

Now read about Harvard's study below.  At the end I will comment again about what is happening here and in the UK on the aspartame issue,

Should you avoid aspartame?

The harmful effects sugar can have on the body has been given a lot of attention. Known for sabotaging diets and packing on extra calories, many people try to avoid sugar by seeking out artificial sweeteners as an alternative. But according to
a new study by the Harvard Medical School, one common sugar substitute, aspartame, could be sabotaging your diet, too. And ironically enough, it is often used most in diet products (diet soda, for example).

To understand more about this study, this week on Take Care
Dr. Richard Hodin, professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, discusses the effects of aspartame on the body.

Aspartame is a chemical sweetener that can be found in everything from soda, to processed desserts, and even condiments like ketchup. And ironically enough, it is often used most in diet products (diet soda, for example).

Although there are a handful of artificial sweeteners currently sold on the market, this particular study focused on aspartame alone. Aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, a chemical known to block important enzymes in the intestines. This knowledge, Hodin said, is what prompted the experiment. The researchers at Harvard Medical School sought to understand the effects of aspartame on the body, so they conducted a series of experiments, including on lab mice.

And the findings were revealing. According to this study, aspartame did indeed block intestinal alkaline phosphatase, or IAP, in the lab mice. IAP plays a pivotal role in overall intestinal and digestive health, and when inhibited, had noticeable negative effects on the mice, namely, a predisposition to obesity and diabetes.

According to Hodin, there hasnt been enough research to determine the amount of aspartame that will cause a serious problem. And considering a majority of the experiments are conducted on mice, the results wont necessarily mirror aspartames effect on humans.

But what researchers do know is, when IAP levels are low, animals tend to gain weight, develop diabetes, and experience other bodily changes consistent with metabolic syndrome, such as a fatty liver, which can eventually lead to heart disease, the leading cause of death in America.

These findings might be upsetting for many, given all the loyal
diet soda drinkers out there. So often, we think were doing all the right things to lose weight, and it turns out our trusted diet products are doing more harm than good. How could a zero calorie soda be bad, right?

Because weight maintenance is about more than calories in and calories out, said Hodin. There are other important factors involved in gaining and losing weight. And although more research is necessary to determine exactly how aspartame affects humans, Hodin was confident that it would cause the same IAP blockage that was seen in the lab mice.

Martini continued:  So what's happening with the aspartame industry these days?  You could spend weeks just reading the articles and studies on the deadly effects of this chemical poison.   Pepsi finally took it out admitting the health concerns but when their profits kept dropping they decided profit was more important than health and put it back in.  The aspartame industry isn't very happy these days.  This morning Lane Shore, Mission Possible Chicago said my emails to him were blocked, or he would have called into a radio show I did.  Just before the show I tried to log onto
www.rense.com who publishes a lot of our  aspartame articles and the web site had been hacked. Jeff Rense said its back up now.  This past week a lot of our articles having to do with the California Identification Committee and Prop 65 became blank although they have now been restored.  Here is what its all about: http://www.rense.com/general96/eardrinkburied.htm The story made the cover of "Freedom Health News".  Stephen Fox, Mission Possible New Mexico, called to say "I checked Rense.com and ten articles are blank."

The largest web site on aspartame,
www.dorway.com has been hacked and has not been restored.  The owner, Tanya Crosby, daughter of David Rietz who died from aspartame, promised him on his deathbed she would always keep DORway to warn the world.  She said she had been repeatedly hacked, gotten hate mail and threatened. I know how that is. If aspartame is safe like the FDA tells the public then what's wrong with the public seeing the government records, studies and experts reports?  We do, however, have the reports and someone just called me and said and if you go to www.dorway.com it says:  "Coming Soon!"  That's good news.  Dr. Lou Cafiero called me recently and there was an announcement on the phone, something like, "this tape is at the end and needs to be removed".  He said, "what is that!!!"  I replied, "my phone is bugged and has been for years".  Dr. H. J. Roberts sometimes would send me things in the mail because he said his phone was bugged. We make everything public, the phone doesn't have to be bugged.  Some people who have damning information or in the media have actually had to send me email under different names for me to get it.  I now have another email, DrBettyMartini@gmail.com as well. I have always made myself assessable on the Internet so no one would go without help,

Notice on the Aspartame Resource Guide
http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_resource_guide.htm my email to Cynthia Oshita on aspartame and cancer when I worked with Prop 65 some years ago,  She told me she never received this email.  Evidently someone else sent her this resource guide and she saw it   I had been talking with her by phone and sent her the studies she needed, two 2 day priority packets , she said she never received.  This time I tried to contact her by email and it didn't get through although others like Stephen Fox using the same email did get in touch.  I couldn't even get through to her by phone.  A lot of us spend a lot of time restoring things that are hacked.

We're still trying to get Diane Fleming who has been in prison for 15 years free.  Her husband was an aspartame addict and died from methanol poisoning.  Obviously it was some kind of chemical reaction from aspartame and creatine.  This Sunday School teacher passed 3 lie detector tests and even the main detective on the case told me she was innocent,  It breaks your heart.  There are other cases as well having to do with methanol poisoning from aspartame. They died.

I've visited many countries and everywhere they know aspartame is bad. .  The FDA approval has been rubberstamped in over 100 countries.  Now Advantame has been approved here, another aspartame product.   But, its very obvious with all going on the aspartame industry is having a bad case of indigestion.

About the UK:   The industry  for years tried to prevent the word getting out there and even sent attorneys to the newspapers telling them they would sue if they wrote about aspartame or me for that matter.  I lectured there twice and the last time was locked up in immigration for three and a half hours with all the aspartame literature confiscated.  Now that's power.  In the end it hurt them quite a bit when the news went public and I did get all the material back.  It made a great introduction at lectures.   A legal department even  sent a mole!

The activists in the UK are remarkable at getting out the news.  It's a network of humanitarian wonderful people who want to save lives and never stop spreading the word.  We all work together as a team for the common good.  Recently activism has been quite vocal,   The CEO of the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, has resigned and the CEO of Food Standards has resigned.  Neither have given a reason.  Aspartame is silently being removed there.  Teamwork truly is the fuel that allows common people to accomplish uncommon results.  I cheer our good friends in the UK.

One of the heroes of the UK is Roger Williams in Parliament and here is his statement:

UK Parliamentary Information Management Services [PIMS ] Early Day Motion EDM 1517

TOXIC PROPERTIES OF ASPARTAME 30.01.2006 January 30, 2006

Williams, Roger

That this House expresses deep concern over the numerous independent toxicological studies and thousands of subjective reports attesting to the toxic effects of the artificial sweetener aspartame on human health; notes that aspartame, once patented as a biochemical warfare agent, is the synthetically produced methyl ester of a dipeptide which is readily broken down in the gut to release methanol; further notes that in naturally occurring foodstuff methanol is either not released into the body or present together with natural defence mechanisms that mitigate its toxic effects; recognises that methanol is a well known poison and is further converted into formaldehyde, a class A carcinogen according to the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer; accepts that severe health concerns occur from the gradual accumulation of formaldehyde in the body which cannot be excreted and that further research has shown that long term low level exposure to formaldehyde induces leukaemia and nasopharyngeal cancer in humans; acknowledges that of the 166 studies conducted on aspartame's safety deemed relevant to humans, 92 per cent. of independently sponsored studies identified one or more problems with aspartame's safety whereas industry-sponsored studies found unanimously in favour of aspartame's safety; and urges the Government to abide by the precautionary principle and make use of Statutes 13 and 16 of the 1990 Food Safety Act to remove aspartame from the permitted list of additives on the UK market."

Stephen Fox, Mission Possible New Mexico in reading this material above said:

"I would only ask what happened to that effort? What was the result and what was the aftermath? Williams comes on like a ton of bricks and says everything absolutely correctly, the most powerful statement in any parliamentary body in the world about aspartame ever to be uttered thus far, resulting in getting the House Leader to gavel him down  for having gone over his time limit in Parliament, and then we don't hear anything for 12 years? What resulted from that stellar effort?

"One other thing that baffles me about this Harvard study is the totality of all of these stupid discussions about whether aspartame causes weight gain or not, back and forth, like some bad tennis game between players with zero skills. Why do these researchers appear to intentionally
overlook the harm that it does after being metabolized as formaldehyde? How could aspartame NOT cause a massive spike in neurodegenerative diseases? No one seems to argue about that or even appear to care!

"A speech by a Harvard Pediatrician back in the 70's about the harm cyclamates did to children got that taken off the market very rapidly. What gives aspartame such long life in the regulatory sense? Was it the $12 million that Searle paid Donald Rumsfeld for ramming it through the FDA process? That was arguably the dirtiest deal in the 80 year history
of the FDA, an agency with one of the most checkered histories in America,"

When it comes  to saving lives good people are very inventive.  I remember when a nurse, Mission Possible Fresno, put toxic waste stickers on the diet pop markers on the machines in the hospital. She was seen on national TV news in the background with her grim reaper outfit and a sign that said, "Shame on the FDA"! One lady received some of our flyers with some nutritional products and it turned out she worked for NutraSweet.  The lady who sent them asked her what she did with them and  she said one night she pinned them up everywhere at work.   At lunch she noticed the bowl of Equal all had something written on them:  "Baby Killers"!  One group got a big brass band and went to the exact spot of the Boston Tea Party and threw in imitation NutraSweet to make a point.   We are a global volunteer force and we have to get to over 6 billion people and we constantly ask the public to get involved,

A division of our operation is Mission Possible Aviation which we started when pilot Cliff Evans crashed his plane on aspartame. See Dr. Russell Blaylock's excellent pilot alert on www, mpwhi, com and congressional records on the issue, Our representative for aviation safety, Captain Fred Fox gave us some of the cases of pilots on American who lost their life from aspartame including one dying in flight drinking a Diet Coke. His wife was refused the autopsy. Dr. Blaylock is the author of "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills", on aspartame and MSG and others, www.russellblaylockmd.com

In closing, Mission Possible World Health Intl has a theme song many have heard sung by Frank Sinatra.  It's called "High Hopes" and these are the lyrics:

"Once there was a silly old ram
Thought he'd punch a hole in a dam
No one could make that ram scram
He kept buttin' that dam

'Cause he had high hopes, he had high hopes He had high apple pie, in the sky hopes.

So any time your feelin' bad
'stead of feelin sad
Just remember that ram
Oops there goes a billion kilowat dam"

Keep an eye on the dam,   It's about to explode!  Just keep on spreading the news and make it a habit to at least save a life a day.
