Colorado Patient Tests Negative For Ebola

LOVELAND - A Colorado patient, who was being evaluated for Ebola after experiencing some of the symptoms, has tested negative, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The CDPHE conducted an Ebola test on the patient at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland. Then the patient was moved to University of Colorado Hospital out of an abundance of caution. They will continue to provide care to the patient to determine whether additional testing is needed.

A specially equipped ambulance took the patient to the hospital Wednesday evening after becoming ill. The patient had recently traveled to an Ebola-affected country.

The CDPHE said the patient was considered to be at low risk of infection with the Ebola virus. The person was placed in an isolated and secure area away from other patients and staff at the Medical Center of the Rockies.

"We've trained for many months ot safely respond to a possible Ebola patient, and our protocols call for transporting the patient to UCH when possible to safely continue evaluation and treatment, Bill Neff, MD, UCHealth chief medical officer, said.

Symptoms may appear anywhere between two to 21 days after exposure and include a fever, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and lack of appetite.

CDPHE wants to remind everyone that Ebola is spread through direct contact with blood and body fluids of a person already showing symptoms of Ebola.

Ebola is not spread through the air, water, food, or mosquitoes.

The identity of the patient has not been released.
