Farcical Syrian Peace Talks
Teeter Toward Collapse Before Beginning

By Stephen Lendman
2-3-16

Over a week since talks were scheduled to start, they haven’t begun. Anti-government posturing continues. Opposition groups are largely terrorists, sworn enemies of peace and stability.

They want Syria raped and destroyed, their Shia and Alawite populations genocidally exterminated, tyranny replacing fundamental freedoms, all nonbelievers extrajudicially killed.

Washington, Britain, France, Germany, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, other Gulf States, Jordan and Israel support this scourge - making a mockery of so-called peace talks.

No serious ones are possible because Western/regional backed terrorists don’t negotiate. They demand. They yield nothing.

They deplore peace and stability. Violence, chaos and human misery are rampant in areas they control - fully supported by Washington, other Western countries and regional rogue states.

Security Council Res. 2254 stipulates Syrians alone must decide their future - without preconditions or outside interference.

Assad’s UN envoy/chief negotiator Bashar al-Jaafari correctly calls its mandated process “a Syrian-Syrian affair,” excluding outside interference by Washington, Riyadh “or anyone else.”

It’s still unclear who “represents the Syrian opposition,” he said. Mistura hasn’t released delegate names. Anti-government terrorist groups continue committing atrocities - with no Western or Saudi-led regional denunciation.

Washington orchestrated talks to fail, the entire process a charade, pro-Western, pro-Saudi, anti-Assad Staffan de Mistura a deplorable choice for interlocutor, his credibility sorely lacking.

“(S)o far, nothing is clear,” al-Jaafari explained. “Will there be one (opposition) delegation or two or three or four? There are no clear answers.”

US/Saudi-backed terrorist groups demand their unacceptable preconditions be met or they’ll leave, maybe Thursday or before week’s end.

Syria’s delegation is the only one arriving in Geneva on time, as scheduled. They’ve shown discipline and commitment to peace, refraining from media posturing - polar opposite how opposition groups keep behaving.

Geneva III reflects tragedy and farce. Syrians keep suffering and dying. Obama’s war bears full responsibility, launched when Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State.

Her direct involvement in US-led naked aggression on Libya and Syria shows how she’ll govern as president if elected - launching and continuing endless wars against invented enemies, maybe confronting Russia, China, and/or Iran belligerently.

Perhaps she’ll be the first US leader to use nuclear weapons since gratuitously against Japan when they were defeated and negotiating surrender.

Syria’s impressive ground offensive gains supported by Russia’s aerial campaign “jeopard(izes)” talks before beginning them, Qatar-owned-and-operated Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday.

John Kerry’s call on Moscow to stop its (anti-terrorist) bombing fell on deaf ears, a thinly veiled effort to give ISIS and other US-supported terrorist groups  breathing space, time to regroup and rearm, enable them to recapture territory government forces regained.

Along with Russian air power, they’re battering ISIS positions in the strategically important Aleppo area, destroying its weapons, cutting off its supply lines.

A major ISIS defeat looms. Russia’s devastatingly effective aerial campaign changed the dynamic on the ground. Moscow isn’t about to relinquish the advantage it gained, nor Syrian ground forces.

Terrorists elements are weakened, incrementally being defeated, a slow process requiring considerable time.

Opposition delegates in Geneva are at a distinct disadvantage - with little leverage to enforce their unacceptable demands. Assad clearly has the upper hand with no intention of backing off.

Sensing defeat, opposition terrorist delegates may pull out and blame him, Geneva III collapsing in the process.

The wild card is what Washington intends doing next. A full-scale ground invasion isn’t likely. It remains to be seen what Obama has in mind.

I’ve said many times he didn’t launch war to quit. Expect him to continue seeking a military solution to replace Syrian sovereignty with pro-Western puppet governance.

It’s uncertain how things will turn out or over what period of time. US-led Balkan wars raged throughout the 1990s, Afghanistan with no letup since October 2001, Iraq ravaged since Jimmy Carter orchestrated war with Iran in 1980.

Syria may face endless war, violence and chaos, victimized by US imperial viciousness.
