Washington - A City Bereft Of Ethics

by Stephen Lendman
1-4-17

House Republicans voting in secret to gut its Office of Congressional Ethics, a nonpartisan body established to monitor ethical conduct of its members, then reversing itself straightaway, is minor compared to the greater issue - the Washington swamp too corrupted and lawless to drain.

Even with good intentions, Trump has no more chance of success than draining one of the world’s oceans or other major bodies of water.

Rarely ever are Republican or Democrat administration, congressional, or bureaucratic members charged with wrongdoing.

Exceptions prove the rule. The same goes for corporate America, especially Wall Street. Grand theft goes unpunished or at most is penalized with meaningless slaps on the wrist. Dirty business as usual persists vitually unobstructed.

One standard applies to powerful interests, another entirely for ordinary people. Equity and justice notions are farcical. Nothing in prospect suggests change.

Washington’s culture is too debauched to fix. Trump has a choice. Play the dirty game or be destroyed by it. Deep state power brokers at most will cut him a little slack, allowing virtually nothing diverging significantly from longstanding domestic and geopolitical policies.

The label “sin city” applied to Las Vegas describes the Washington cesspool. Nothing short of revolution can change things. Elections when held are farcical.

Voting is a waste of time. Democracy is pure fantasy. America’s one-party state with two right wings exposes a nation ruled by privileged elites for their own self-interest exclusively.

Public outrage over the ethics office debacle shows its detachment from reality - angry over a relatively minor issue, largely silent on major ones mattering most.

After arguably the most disgraceful presidency in US history, most Americans view Obama positively - mindless of the enormous harm he inflicted on humanity at home and abroad, ignorant of his high crimes.

Public outrage over what matters most is absent - silence instead of vitally needed rage in the streets for real change.

Without it, continued status quo abuses of power are certain without letup - a slippery slope toward full-blown tyranny unless challenged and stopped.

What’s more important to protest about than that?
