- A bus driver dubbed "El Dracula"
has been arrested for murder - suspected of killing up to 190 young women.
Jesus Guardado Marquez, 26, could turn out to be one of the world's worst
serial killers.
-
- He claims several of his co-drivers were
involved in the kidnap, sexual torture and murder of dozens of factory
girls they drove home from work.
-
- Police confirm they are investigating
the murder of more than 100 women, while civil rights groups put the number
at 190.
-
- Victims have been raped, strangled with
their own belts and shoelaces, and their bodies dumped in the desert. Most
are described as young, slim, petite and with long, dark hair.
-
- Over the past six years, three women
a month have gone missing in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez on the border
with Texas.
-
- Detectives believe that whenever a young
woman was the last passenger on Guardado Marquez's bus he would drive to
the desert and demand sex.
-
- If they refused, he allegedly raped
and killed them before driving home to his wife.
-
- Beaten
-
- Guardado Marquez was arrested after a
14-year-old girl who had been raped and beaten identified him as her attacker.
He was held in the nearby town of Durango after allegedly beating his wife
so badly she suffered a miscarriage.
-
- State prosecutors originally said he
confessed, but he later protested in court papers that the confession had
been beaten out of him.
-
- One of the women Guardado Marquez is
accused of killing is 17-year-old Cargrario Gonzalez Lopez, whose body
was found last year in a remote area in northwest Juarez. Police said the
busman admitted having sex with her but claimed she was killed by another
driver.
-
- Last night four of Guardado Marquez's
colleagues who drove the largely female workforce to border assembly plants,
were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the killings.
-
- Zully Ponce, a special prosecutor in
charge of the investigation, said: "It is obvious that there are more
people implicated in these killings."
