- LONDON " Britain's Prince Philip feels like a ''refugee husband''
to Queen Elizabeth and thinks the media have turned the royal family into
a soap opera, the royal spouse said in an interview.
-
- The 77-year-old Greek-born father of
the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, told the Sunday Telegraph that
his eldest son was a romantic. He also said he could "see no point''
in keeping in touch with the Duchess of York " who is divorced from
his second son Andrew.
-
- "The press have turned us into a
soap opera,'' said the outspoken Philip, whose remarks have often plunged
him into controversy. He once said British students who stayed too long
in China risked coming home "slit-eyed.''
-
- Asked how he thought he was perceived
by others, the Prince said: "I don't know. Refugee husband, I suppose.''
-
- He was candid about his former daughter-in-law
Sarah Ferguson, who has pursued a career as a talk show host in the United
States since her divorce from Andrew.
-
- "I am not vindictive... I don't
see her because I don't see much point,'' he said, adding that his outspokenness
stemmed from a conscious decision not to be a 'yes man'.
-
- "Safer not to be too popular. You
can't fall too far,'' he added.
-
- The Duke of Edinburgh said being married
to the Queen had forced him to make compromises, including sidelining a
promising military career.
-
- "You have to make compromises. That's
life. I accepted it. I tried to make the best of it,'' he said. "I
had to fit into the institution. I had to avoid getting at cross purposes,
usurping others' authority.''
