- JERUSALEM - According to
an Israeli researcher, Viagra is not just for men. The anti-impotence
drug can also double the lifespan of plants, fruit and vegetables.
-
- Professor Yaacov Leshem dissolved two or three milligrams
of Viagra in water. He applied the solution to a cut flower. He discovered
that it helps slow down the emission of ethylene.
-
- Ethylene is a gaseous hormone that causes fruit, vegetables
and plants to ripen and eventually age.
-
- The professor's Bar-Ilan University and the University
of Newcastle in Australia have registered a patent on the findings.
-
- They believe Viagra could revolutionize packaging and
storage of produce.
-
- For now, a note of caution: Leshem says it's okay to
try Viagra at home if you want to pep up the flowerbed. But there's been
no research to explore whether it's safe for humans to eat foods dosed
with the drug.
